Medicaid is a health insurance program for low-income individuals and families who cannot afford healthcare. Long a federal program, Medicaid recently switched from fee-for-service to managed care as it went from government-owned to private owned. As of July 1, 2021, the new Medicaid plans took effect across the country. Locally the program is now called “NC Medicaid Managed Care.” Because of this, Medicaid patients were required to choose a health plan and indicate a primary care provider between March 1, 2021 and May 14, 2021.

There are 5 health plans participating in the new NC Medicaid program:

  • AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina
  • Carolina Complete Health
  • Healthy Blue (Blue Cross Blue Shield)
  • United Healthcare Community Plan of NC
  • WellCare of North Carolina

JCMC Health participates in all five available health plans. (Have questions about your coverage? You can find the contact information for each participating health plan here.)

Didn’t Select a Provider?

So, you didn’t indicate your health plan and provider, and now the new plans are in effect. What now?

If you did not select your JCMC provider as your primary care physician (PCP), you were assigned by NCTracks to a primary care practice. NCTracks used past assignment information, geography, and historic utilization to best assign you. You should have received a Medicaid ID card in the mail with your primary care practice listed.

If you were assigned away from JCMC, or have questions about your PCP, contact your health care plan at the number on your new ID card. Not sure which plan you enrolled in? You can find the information in the Welcome Kit that came with your new ID card. If you have additional questions or did not receive a Welcome Kit, contact the Enrollment Broker at 833-870-5500.
